“Being Bad at New Things. As I've gotten older, I've realized that learning new skills I'm passionate about gives me so much lasting joy in my life. The whole process: being BAD at something is incredibly humbling, and while I struggle with giving up that control and being uncomfortable, I recognize that if I'm doing something repeatedly that I'm so bad at, it means I'm actively chipping away at that lack of skill and getting better, even if my progess is so much slower than I want it to be. Another aspect of this joy is taking classes and learning from experts. That time feels like a gift to myself and I love supporting people in my community who are experts.

I've been trying to learn to dance on my rollerskates for almost 5 years now (thanks pandemic! ) and I'm still SO FAR away from my goals, but I have also made a ton of progress. I've taken classes from an incredible skater, Dalila Gittens at the Beacon and it's a whole community of people I'd never otherwise meet, and seeing up close someone who is so talented and has worked so hard like Dalila is so fun and exciting.”
